A little delayed, but hey...I’ve been busy. Why didn’t anyone tell me that life with two kids is like living in perpetual fast forward? I remember adjusting to life as a new parents when we brought Claire home. Logically, we knew that lots of people had done this whole “parenting thing” before us, but we felt like we were blazing new trails. Multiply that by 10 now. The idea of getting both kids ready to go somewhere...say, before noon, is completely out of the realm of comprehension.
So...rewind three weeks. Hayden is three days late and I’m researching ways to induce labor. It turns out, he didn’t need the eviction notice I had printed out and was ready to tape to my belly. Contractions started at about 2 a.m. on August 7 and were actually quite manageable. By about 1 p.m., they were close enough together that we decided to head to the hospital. Claire was napping when we left, and I looked in on her and thought, “Oh Baby, you have no idea how much your world is about to change.”
For a variety of reasons, we decided to use a midwife and try for a drug free delivery. A few of my friends thought I was insane, and honestly, about five minutes before Hayden was born, I thought I was insane, too. They say you forget the pain. It’s only been three weeks, but I sure haven’t forgotten it. It was absolutely worth every bit of it, but I haven’t forgotten it. Hayden was born at 9:04 p.m., exactly 2 hours and 56 minutes before my 30th birthday. Good timing, Kid! I am still of the mindset that because my 30th birthday was such a whirlwind and I spent it in a hospital, that I’m still 29.
We came home after two days and began life as a family of four. Claire was a bit uncertain about sharing her mom and dad with this new guy, but she’s getting used to him now. The first time he started crying, she joined right in and was much harder to calm down than he was. Now, in true Big Sister fashion, she just says, “Quiet Hayden,” when he cries. Nighttime is tricky because she wakes up when he cries, but everyone with two kids tells us that the older one gets used to the noise and eventually sleeps through it. Or maybe he’ll start sleeping through the night (I can dream, can’t I?)!!
It seems like yesterday that I was sitting in an apartment in Kazakhstan and writing a post to Claire’s blog called “Sumner, Party of 3.” It’s hard to believe that a year and half later, we’re “Sumner, Party of 4.” No, don’t expect to see “Sumner, Party of 5” anytime soon.
